The letters reveal the story of the courageous and successful struggle of an English merchant to retrieve his broken fortunes and repay his creditors by service in the East India Company and Deputy Governor of Bencoolen and Governor of Madras from 1711 to 1719.

During these years, his letters to his daughter Betty and his sister-in-law disclose his views on the essentials for a happy marriage and his last letters express his satisfaction at his daughters choice.
